I wonder how reliable SSD is in the grand scheme of things.

The major downside of SSD's is that any given bit/byte/block has a finite amount of write cycles. If you look, you can find many RAID solutions that are targeted specifically at SSD drives, so SSD's are not at all a RAID replacement (at least not today). More recently, vendors have been adding facilities to help spread the load across the drive evenly, using internal re-mappings and whatnot. In effect, a lot of these drives have a (limited) built-in tolerance.

Still though, if you're trusting 100% of your data on a single device, then you're probably in bad shape - I hope your backups are good, because eventually that device is going to fail. My advice? Keep with the old adage - don't put all your eggs in one basket.

Jack,

All media will have bit rot. However for the last 3 years I have had a 1TB SSD in my main development server for Informix with no problems and we have had 2-3 1 or 2 TB disks fail. I think bigger disks are more likely to fail. Use Raid 10 to provide true redundancy.

Regards - Lester
