You don't need to do an archive or a restore. Just install the new release
in a different INFORMIXDIR, copy the ONCONFIG and sqlhosts files, shutdown
the older version, change INFORMIXDIR to point to the new software and
start up the new version. It will perform any require data and structural
conversions automatically.

However, WHY are you upgrading to an unsupported version? Informix
9.40.UC9 dates from late 2003 IB. You could relicense with the current
versions (11.70.xC8 or 12.10.xC1) and get about 40% better performance and
tons of new features!

The reason is that I doubt that newest ids version will not be ok to
run on the
old OS version.
And I hope that I won't need to upgrade host and OS.

What is the O/S and what version is the O/S? Would be interesting to know how old the hardware is.
